Miel Caracolí for Future

In the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, families in rural communities started to produce honey for their livelihoods and to strengthen the biodiversity in the area.

To scale up their production and increase their income, they are currently looking for financial support.

Between the small rivers, the forest and the wild animals in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, you find the community of San Jorge. Parts of this community are not only Colombian families, but also families who have fled from nearby Venezuela to build a new, peaceful life. Although they have escaped violence, they, like many other Colombian families, face financial insecurity and living in poverty on a daily basis.

The community created the association Red EcoAgro to strengthen their agricultural activities and implement sustainable practices. Three years ago, Red EcoAgro saw honey production as one way to create a financial basis for the families but also offer an alternative to illegal logging. Besides income generation, beekeeping is an important means to protect the environment, increase biodiversity and sustainability.

Now the project "Miel Caracolí" has approximately thirty families who are looking for taking the next step and making their honey production more commercially viable and professional. InnNature Foundation is helping them to get the resources to make it real, through a crowdfunding of 3600 EUR. This amount will be invested in more equipment, tools and beehives for a larger production of honey, training courses on new technics of beekeeping and packaging and marketing for the commercialization of honey in different cities of Colombia.
